GLOBAL STEM CHAPTER

Historical background.

Kijjabwemi global STEM chapter started at around the month of July 2019. It was inaugurated by Prof. Usha Rajdev in the school library. The head teacher, deputies were present. The chapter has over 500 students. Active classes are S1 and S2.

Objectives of the Project

Kijjabwemi S.S

1. Mobiles many students join Kijjabwemi S.S STEM club.
2. To inspire students, love science subjects though STEM practices science, technology, Art and mathematics.
3. Encourage innovatreners ie creativity and creativity among students.
4. Promotes leadership skills among young students of the schools.
5. Presume network locally and internationally e.g. int amny mont unusity – USA.
6. To educate the community throughout reach programs e. t. c. e.g. teaching them how to make and use mosquito traps.

Achievements of Kijjabwemi


1. Our teachers and students learnt how to make and use mosquito traps.
2. Many mosquito larvae were trapped and destroyed.
3. Our community benefited e.g. Kijjabwemi primary school (fought them making mosquito traps).
4. Installed five traps in their school.
5. Taught parents on 5/ 03/ 2021 making traps.
6. Malaria causes have reduced in our school from Jan up to date
7. Stem helped us to do virtual classroom teaching via zoom, Google meet.
8. Helped this manage action plan and work plan.
9. Prof. connected our school to Smith Sonia work shop/ webnars. 28/01/2022 – 30/ 01 2020

13. After covid – all schools were advised blending learning
14. For us we had acquired it from Smithsman Webnars online (BUST)

17. Blending learning saves time and money, it is fun and can be self pacxed, flexible and promotes soft skills needed in MUK places
18. Soft skills are time management, critical thinking, cooperation, confidence and team building.

STEM Project 17\02\2022

20 mosquito traps

20 mosquito traps were made and installed in the girls wing hostel.

STEM Project 24\02\2022

More traps

More traps were made and installed at boy’s hostel. These were 12 in number.

STEM Project 3\3\2022.

Observation was made on the traps

In the girls wing \hostel.
The mosquito Larvea was seen
The Larvae was somehow nasty.

STEM Project 5\03\2022

Oil was applied

Oil was applied on the traps that were installed at the girls wing
Oil was meant to suffocate and kill the mosquito Larvae.

STEM Project 10\03\2022

Mosquito traps at Kijjabwemi primary school.

2 traps were found destroyed
Fore rubbish had been trapped on the funnels
Seed dispersal of black Jack seeds had taken place
Solution in traps had become too thick to see the Larvae.

Challenges/Needs Assessment

1. Covid pandemic – closure of schools
2. We lack a functional, large and spacious Lab
3. We Lack and ICT Laboratory
4. We have inadequate equipment e.g. microscopes and hand Lenses.
5. Dissection kits for science subjects are very few.
6. Modern science books are inadequate in our school
7. Destroyed traps during COVID lockdown.

Future plans

1. Expand community outreaches by curving out model homes.
2. Use large gatherings e.g. parents ’meetings, churches, markets to spread STEM Practices, mosquito repellant plants.
3. Market and spread STEM to neighboring schools
-Incorporate STEM practices to all Art subjects
4. Hosting and staging STEM exhibitions in our school
-Teaching our students and community biological ways of preventing mosquitos.

Traps at Kijjabwemi S.S boys wing

4 traps were destroyed. 15 traps had been made. These traps had an un pleasant smell.

Recommendations

There is need to locate more traps in bushy areas to avoid destruction. Malaria reports from sick bay of Kijjabwemi Sec. school.
Since the installation of mosquito traps at our school there has been remarkable reduction in malaria cases from the school.
